Heavy snow across Austria and Switzerland have led to a series of avalanches in Austria and Switzerland, combined with high winds, caution has been advised, particularly off piste. Unfortunately leading to ten dying.
Austrian police have announced five deaths on Sunday 5th February.
With only vague details to go by, reports state a 17 year old from New Zealand was killed in an avalanche off piste in Kaltenbach in Austria.
Saturday, a 50 year old man was killed in the Kleinwalsertal valley in Austria.
Friday, a 32 year old man died in an avalanche in the Austria resort of Solden.
Also recovered was a ski guide in St Anton and a 62 year old man who was cross-country skiing around the summit of Hohe Aifner in the Tirol.
Speaking of Tirol, 30 avalanches were reported on Saturday, 11 of them involved people.
Stubai was also closed on Saturday due to heavy snow and high winds.
Two off-piste skiers were also killed by an avalanche in Graubunden. A 56-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man.
Caution is always advised when venturing off piste. It’s also importance to carry the appropriate equipment when off piste – avalanche transceiver, probe & shovel.
