But winter holidays require more thinking with specialised clothing, appropriate safety gear, and dedicated accessories to ensure comfort and enjoyment.

Whether you’re skiing in the Alps, North America or Japan, our comprehensive guide covers what you need to bring for a fantastic time.

Ski Holiday Packing List Essential Ski Clothing

Base Layers

The foundation for keeping you warm. Base layers help keep sweat at bay and keep your body warm. Choose moisture wicking materials such as merino wool. We recommend top of your ski holiday packing list should be:

  • 2–3 thermal tops
  • 2–3 thermal leggings

For example, this men’s Icebreaker Men’s Merino Wool Top, or matching Icebreaker Men’s Merino Wool Bottoms. For the women’s equivalent head here for the Icebreaker top and Icebreaker bottoms.

Mid Layers

These keep you nice and warm. Mid layers aim to trap and retain the heat between your base layer and jacket. For instance a lightweight fleece, jumper or lightweight jackets.

  • 1–2 fleeces
  • 1-2 insulated mid-layer jacket

Examples of mid layers are plentiful. For example, good value Regatta options, men’s here and women’s here. Alternatively, a higher quality option you may want for men’s Berghaus, Columbia, or Helly Hansen. Or women’s, Columbia or Helly Hansen.

Ski Jacket and Ski Trousers

Jackets and trousers are what people immediately think of when thinking of the ski holiday packing list, obviously. These outsides layers need to be waterproof as a must, ideally windproof and breathable too. Furthermore, we advise they have some element of a bright colour. Nothing worse than seeing people of winter slopes in the colour White.

  • 1 ski jacket

Ski Socks

Check out our ski socks guide with further information on ski socks. We recommend packing around 2–4 pairs of ski specific socks, warm, durable, comforting, breathable, long and not too thick.

Gloves or Mittens

Ski gloves are another essential. They must be insulated and waterproof. Mittens are warmer for colder climates.

Neck Warmer / Or A Buff and Hat

A warm neck tube or buff will protect you from wind as well as in extremely cold conditions, the opportunity to pull slightly up and cover the face. A warm hat is also essential for après-ski, after taking the helmet off, if you’re outdoors your ears and head will soon become very cold if not for a woolly hat.
