With the latest instalment of the Winter Olympics, Milan-Cortina, starting on Friday 6th February and ending on Sunday 22nd February many are eagerly awaiting news on whether they have made the cut. Well, for Team GB, the wait is over as Team GB Announces Milano Cortina 2026 Athletes.

The line up was announced on the 23 January 2026 and features some experienced names to potential new stars.

Dave Ryding is set to feature in his fifth and final Winter Olympics at Milan-Cortina having already announced his retirement post Olympics.

Zoe Atkin, currently the freestyle skiing halfpipe world champion and Mia Brookes, who became the youngest world champion at 16 years old with her slopestyle gold in 2023 are definite medal hopefuls. Mia Brookes will come into the Olympics in extremely hot form having just won X-Games Gold.

Additionally, Charlotte Bankes, the 2021 snowboard cross champion is a potential medal hopeful.

Bankes, the 2021 snowboard cross world champion, will race at her fourth Olympics in both the individual and team events, the latter alongside Huw Nightingale, with whom she also won the mixed team world title in 2023.

Kirsty Muir returns at 21 for her second Winter Olympics having been Team GB’s youngest athlete in Beijing four years ago, competing in the freeski slopestyle and big air. Alongside Chris McCormick who also is set to feature in freeski slopestyle and big air.

Why the Change of Sölden Introducing an Alocohol Free Zone?

Sölden’s local government highlights a sharp rise in noise, litter, unsafe behaviour and rowdyness linked to excessive drinking. According to Deputy Mayor Maximilian Riml, individuals were increasingly finishing their drinks outside bars, leading to “broken beer glasses, noise into the late night and even street “soccer matches” with beer mugs.”

The mayor, Ernst Schöpf, emphasises that après ski isn’t being shut down, just controlled.

“Sölden should remain a place where you can celebrate – but with more moderation and consideration.”

What the Rules Are of Sölden Introducing an Alocohol Free Zone?

• From December through 19 April 2026, the public streets between the Giggijochbahn and Gaislachkoglbahn and surrounding areas (including around the Freizeit Arena and residential zones), will be subject to a strict ban.
• In this zone, open alcohol containers (bottles or cups) are forbidden in public.
• However, the ban does not apply inside bars, restaurants, or on licensed terraces. Therefore Aprés ski as many know it, will not change.

Enforcement & Penalties

To ensure compliance, security personnel will patrol the restricted area. Those breaching the ban could face steep fines of up to €2,000.

The regulation has also been put in place to raise awareness and encourage more respectful behaviour in public spaces.

A Broader Trend

Sölden isn’t alone in enforcing alcohol restricted areas. Other Alpine ski towns like Ischgl and Fiss have introduced similar rules aimed at curbing raucous behaviour, loud street partying and restore a more peaceful tourism image.

What This Means for Visitors to Sölden

• If you’re planning to enjoy the your après-ski, you can still do so in bars and restaurants. Just avoid drinking alcohol on the streets.
• The zone affects the main village road, often referred to as the “party mile”.
• For visitors who appreciate a more balanced, respectful mountain lifestyle, this change may improve both the ambience and the quality of stay.

GB Snowboarder Mia Brookes is World Champion. Yes, you read correctly. The 16 year old has taken the snowboard slopestyle title in her first senior World Championships.

Competing in the 2023 World Ski Championships, Bakuriani in Georgia (the country not the US state). Mia made history by becoming the youngest World Champion in the history of snowboarding having turned 16 only last week. Subsequently, Mia also becomes the youngest British freestyler – snowboarder or skier – to become a World Champion.

Lying in second place before her final run Mia needed some spectacular to take gold – and she duly delivered. Becoming the first snowboarding to land a CAB 1440 double grab in a women’s competition.

Two adults are in critical condition and six children are among those hurt in a collision between a minibus and a four-wheel drive vehicle near Albertville in France.

On Sunday an incident involving two vehicles has been reported to have crashed almost head on. The incident occurred near the town of Albertville in the Savoie region of France.

The Times newspaper reported that a 4×4 was carrying a family of five, including two children. They were on their way to the Les Arcs ski area from Geneva Airport.

The other vehicle involved was a minibus, reporting to have been transporting eleven people, including four children. They were on their way to Geneva Airport from the ski resort Courchevel and reportedly driven by a British citizen living in the French Alps.

Subsequently, 30 firefighters and two helicopters attended and the injured were taken to hospitals in Albertville, Chambéry, and Grenoble.

An investigation is now underway. However tests showed that neither driver had taken drugs or alcohol.

This has occurred during one of the busiest periods, and weekend of the ski seasons. Sunday was the final day of British school half-terms, the middle of the French school holidays and the last day of the 2023 Alpine World Championships.

One of the busiest weeks of the ski season is upon us. Below you can find some February half term 2023 hints to make the most of your holiday!

February Half Term 2023 Hints

Take a packed lunch on the piste

If you have a large family, consider taking a packed lunch out for the day, this will save huge amounts on food. A few sandwiches, baguettes, couple of pieces of fruit, maybe some nuts, water, juice. Whatever you fancy, if you can avoid the ever increasing prices of lunch on the piste, then you’re onto a winter.

Avoid restaurants and bars over lunchtime

If you don’t fancy taking a packed lunch and want to treat yourself on the piste. Then we would recommend having an early lunch, say 11:00, or perhaps a later lunch, say 15:00. Restaurants are less busy to enjoy but also, whilst everyone else is having lunch between 12:00 – 14:00, the pistes tend to be quieter. Best of both worlds.

Pack for all weather

Even when you’re an adult, the cold is never fun. Let alone if you’re a child. So make sure you have everything you need to stay warm. Perhaps some spare gloves, a scarf, and extra base layer, jumper, maybe even a towel – just be sure to keep it dry. You can even look into purchase heat pads – like these ones on millets which will only set you back £1.50 per pack.

Alternative events

Plenty of ski resorts around Europe appreciate the fact that’s in a half term and thus cater for that. By that we mean, look out for child friendly activities in resort and the local town. Ski resorts have other amenities to keep you busy too, bowling alleys, climbing centres, cinemas, ice skating rings, tubing, swimming pools, Just because you’re on a ski holiday, doesn’t always mean you just have to ski or snowboard.

The Glencoe ski resort have announced The Mighty Coe 2023, containing a fantastic programme of ski and snowboard events over 10-12th March. UK’s only mountain-based ski and snowboard festival.

Celebrated for now a second year, today, February 10th brings in International Ski Patrol Day 2023. Recognising the exceptional work of ski patrollers who support skiers and snowboarders day in day out each winter.

Snow sports provide a thrill and excitement than many other sports can’t match. But snow sports come with their own danger and would be impossible without the ski patrol teams patrolling around the world in the thousands of ski resorts and pistes.

Providing medical help, supporting and recovering injured skiers and snowboarders from the mountains, on piste, to off piste, avalanche control, search and recovery – they provide support for all. We hope many people won’t ever need their help, but the reality is some will – and the role they play in safety is unrivalled.

Helly Hansen have also announced that 5% of online sales will be donated to support ski patrollers worldwide from 9-11 February.

However, if you’re out and about on the piste this season and come across an opportunity to donate, celebrate or just say thanks to the ski patrollers – then we highly recommend doing so. You don’t just need to donate on International Ski Patrol Day 2023.

The 1 day ski pass for the Grandvalira ski area has been increased to €65 between the period of 11th February 2023 and 25th February 2023 – coinciding with many half term holidays in the UK.

The main resorts this will impact are those that sit within the Grandvalira piste are, Pas de la Casa, Soldeu, Grau Roig and El Tarter

Disappointing news for many holiday makers, not just those UK folk who intend to visit Andorra in this period. However, given the significantly reduced income during covid it’s unsurprising that Grandvalira have taken this decision.

There have also been numerous reports of price increases across the European alps and other resorts, with a price of a beer spotted at over €10 on the French pistes and meals costing significantly more.

When it comes to skiing and snowboarding, the financially savvy will already know how to reduce costs – but paying for a lift pass is somewhat unavoidable. So packing your own lunch for the day, including snacks along the way. Possibly a flask or two with some hot chocolate, tea of coffee in will definitely held reduce costs when you’re out and about.

Heavy snow across Austria and Switzerland have led to a series of avalanches in Austria and Switzerland, combined with high winds, caution has been advised, particularly off piste. Unfortunately leading to ten dying.

Austrian police have announced five deaths on Sunday 5th February.

With only vague details to go by, reports state a 17 year old from New Zealand was killed in an avalanche off piste in Kaltenbach in Austria.

Saturday, a 50 year old man was killed in the Kleinwalsertal valley in Austria.

Friday, a 32 year old man died in an avalanche in the Austria resort of Solden.

Also recovered was a ski guide in St Anton and a 62 year old man who was cross-country skiing around the summit of Hohe Aifner in the Tirol.

Speaking of Tirol, 30 avalanches were reported on Saturday, 11 of them involved people.

Stubai was also closed on Saturday due to heavy snow and high winds.

Two off-piste skiers were also killed by an avalanche in  Graubunden. A 56-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man.

Caution is always advised when venturing off piste. It’s also importance to carry the appropriate equipment when off piste – avalanche transceiver, probe & shovel.

Two weeks of competition will commence on Monday 6th February when Courchevel & Meribel (France) welcomes the 2023 Alpine Ski Championships, bringing together 600 athletes from 75 countries across six disciplines, battling it out for 13 sets of medals.

With this being the fourth time in history that the Alpine Ski Championships are being held in the French Alps, much anticipation is building.
